It's interesting how quickly the two hours became a blur in your memory; that happens to me, too, in similar situations. I remember a few things about my own dissertation defense in 1999, which was conducted privately in a small room with just me, an English professor as the chair, two of my professors, and two other professors on speaker phone. I still remember a few of the questions I was asked, and waiting anxiously outside the room for fifteen minutes while they discussed my fate. Afterward my two professors took me to a pub for a meal. If I remember correctly, my supervisor talked about how much more time and ceremony was involved in a dissertation defense in Scandinavia, so I was trying to picture something like that at 5:15 AM on May 29 as I was sending positive thoughts your way. I'm glad to hear that everything went as well as I expected it would.Scott G. One thing that is certain is that the “Secret Mark” fragment is related to texts that Morton Smith, working in the 1950′s, would not have been aware of. It is unlikely that Morton Smith was a genius forger who was a generation ahead of his era’s scholarship, who was able to mimic Clement’s writing style, produce a text pastiche referring to texts that were not well known in his era and set it down in an authentic 18th c. handwriting style.
The simpler conclusion is that “Secret Mark” is authentic and belongs to a rather large family of related texts.

http://www.globalserve.net/~yuku/bbl/secmk.htm

David BlockerAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7212699990910971719.post-32155666834184966942013-01-28T09:10:26.820+02:002013-01-28T09:10:26.820+02:00The number of literary co incidences between the “...The number of literary co incidences between the “Secret Mark” fragments and stories in the canonical gospels and in Hebrew Matthew make it very unlikely that Morton Smith forged the text. Hopefully this will answer for instance what the chemical composition of the ink is. As King puts it:
“We are also pursuing chemical testing of the ink. The owner has agreed that the fragment itself will remain at Harvard University for the time being, where it will be accessible to accredited scholars.”

And:
“We are currently in the process of seeking to havethe chemical composition of the ink tested by non-destructive methods. While this analysis will not yield a specific date, it can indicate whether the composition of the ink corresponds to comparable inks used in antiquity. “

She also writes:
“On the other hand, there are a number of other facts that point toward authenticity. Most notably, it would be extremely difficult to forge the way the ink has been preserved on the writing material. As mentioned above, the ink on the verso has faded badly, an unfortunate characteristic shared with many ancient papyri, but an indicator of a long aging process.”
Roger Viklundhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07853787732807301588noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7212699990910971719.post-21504233783760793132012-07-07T15:40:06.982+03:002012-07-07T15:40:06.982+03:00There will be more details revealed about Quesnell...There will be more details revealed about Quesnell's encounter with the manuscript in the future (I don't have them at the moment; otherwise I wouldn't hesitate to share them). To be quite exact, Quesnell did tell to a number of scholars about his handling of the manuscript already during the 1980s. But at that time no one thought much about it. I believe it is only because our perspective got shattered and built anew following Carlson's The Gospel of Hoax (2005) that such details as extra sets of photographs have become more important. Maybe that is the "other context" you refer to as, indeed, should someone knowledgeable of the debate happen upon the missing manuscript now, it would certainly be malpractice to withhold the information.Timo S.
